Duct Cleaning

What is Duct Cleaning?Your Duct Cleaning Technician

Most people are now aware that indoor air pollution is an issue of growing concern and increased visibility. Duct cleaning generally refers to the cleaning of various heating and cooling system components of forced air systems, including the supply and return air ducts, registers, grilles, heat exchangers, heating and cooling coils, drip pans, fan motor and fan housing, and the air handling unit housing.

If not properly installed, maintained, and operated, these components may become contaminated with particles of dust, pollen or other debris. If moisture is present, the
potential for microbiological growth (e.g., mold) is increased and spores from such
growth may be released into the home's living space. Some of these contaminants
may cause allergic reactions or other symptoms in people if they are exposed to them.
Failure to clean a component of a contaminated system can result in re-contamination
of the entire system, thus negating any potential benefits. Understanding your typical
heating & cooling system
will help you determine when you need to take

Did You Know?

  • When measured out, each person inhales over 3,500 gallons of air each day. Also, children inhale more air for their size than adolescents or adults.
  • Contaminated indoor air causes 94% of all respiratory problems.
  • Approximately 40,000 dust mites can live in one ounce of dust and are the most commonly
    misunderstood cause of allergies.
  • Each person sheds up to 700,000 skin flakes per day. Those skin flakes are the staple diet of an
    average dust mite.
  • Even in very clean homes, approximately 40 pounds of dust is generated each year per
1,500 sq. ft. of living space.

contaminates that can pass-through your filter. Less dust and dirt in your system
will save you money on your heating bills in the winter season.

Tips on How to Prevent Indoor Air Contamination

  • Use a filter with a high MERV rating. MERV is the standard rating used to measure the efficiency of your filter. The higher the rating the fewer the dust particles and other air borne contaminants may enter your heating and cooling system. This in turn will save you money on your heating bills in the winter season.

  • Change your filters at least every three months. If your filter becomes clogged, have them
    changed more frequently.

  • Be sure you do not have any missing filters and that air cannot bypass filters through gaps around the filter holder. This causes dirt particles to go directly into your furnace, making it dirty and not run efficiently.

  • When having your heating and cooling system maintained or checked for any reason, be sure to ask your technician about the cooling coils and drain pans. Asking your technician about the cooling coils and drain pans will allow him to determine why your heating and cooling system is running inefficiently. You may check your cooling coils and drain pans for excess water or rust, which are signs of older heating and cooling systems.

  • During construction or renovation work that produces dust in your home, seal off supply and return registers, and do not operate the heating and cooling system until after cleaning up the dust.

  • Be sure to always remove dust and vacuum your home regularly. This will keep your home clean and efficient.
